Female Mallards

Once again we went to camp this weekend. These are two of my favorite photos. I think they are pretty good. Dave, what is your assessment?

The first one has poor contrast - a brown duck in brown water - ok the water may be clear but the shallow bottom is brown so it's the same result. Although I admit the water drop off the peak was a nice touch but it took me 5 minutes to spot that simply because of the low contrast.

The second is much better because of the green grass adding contrast. The duck is also turned slightly towards the lens and the lighting is better.
However - there are two problems.
The classic duck problem is the angle. For duck photos to work - you've got to lie on your belly and get level with the duck. Sometimes shooting at the long end of a telephoto helps too but getting down on the belly is the best way.
The second problem is the grass across the face.
I'd spend some time on it and photoshop out those two strands of grass. It would make a HUGE difference to the composition. The other grass helps frame the ducks face perfectly so they were incorporated great - it's just those two forward pieces that kill it.
